HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY 2025

 

On the occasion of the Holocaust Remembrance Day 2025, the Jewish Museum Lecce proposes a rich calendar of initiatives that will take place under the patronage of the Puglia Region, the Province of Lecce, the Municipality of Lecce, the Municipality of Guagnano, the Municipality of Salice Salentino, the Municipality of Manduria, UCEI - Union of Italian Jewish Communities, the Jewish Community of Naples, ANFIM and the Museum of Memory and Hospitality of Santa Maria al Bagno, in collaboration with Infotab Tours, Lecceventi, MAiDE Art Gallery, Cantine Leuci, 5CL, Melograni Martino and Loft Music School.

Saturday, 25th January 2025 - Open Space Palazzo Carafa, Municipality of Lecce

4:30 pm Press conference to present the events of the Holocaust Remembrance Day 2025.

 

Sunday, 26th January 2025 - Jewish Museum Lecce

10 amGuided tour of the Museum and the ancient medieval Giudecca, curated by Fabrizio Lelli, Director of the Jewish Museum Lecce and Professor of Hebrew language and literature at La Sapienza University (Rome) and Fabrizio Ghio, architect and archaeologist, member of the scientific committee of the Jewish Museum Lecce. Followed by the visit to MAiDE Art Gallery with the exhibition "Lecce’s limestone heritage and more" celebrating the cultural and artistic heritage of the Lecce's limestone through a didactic apparatus and installations that illustrate its beauty and versatility, emphasising the crucial role played by the spring waters of Lecce which not only shaped the native stone and gave it its unique characteristics, but were also of fundamental importance in the history of the medieval Jewish community, as they were essential for the purification rites of the body in the mikveh, the Jewish ritual bath. The exhibition will feature artefacts and works developed by artists working in Lecce stone, bearing witness to the encounter between local tradition and Jewish culture.

 

11:30 am – Projection of the documentary Shores of Light", dedicated to the history of Jewish refugees who were received in the post-war transit camps in Salento. Introduced by Fabrizio Lelli and the director Gady Castel, in connection from Israel. At the end of the screening, the protagonists of the docu-film, Shuni Lifshitz, Rivka Cohen and Ester Hertzog, they will leave their testimony.

 

6 pm – Inauguration of the exhibition Puglia, crossroads of the Mediterranean - Mobility of people, goods and cultures curated by Fabrizio Lelli and Fabrizio Ghio.

Since ancient times, Puglia's geographical position has made it a bridge between Europe and the Mediterranean. A land of exchanges and encounters, over the centuries the Adriatic has been home to different peoples who, over time, have integrated with other local centres, creating cultural testimonies that are still visible today. The interwoven histories that have shaped contemporary Puglian society are the fabric of our history.

In parallel, the contemporary art exhibition "Wander, Persist, Survive", curate by Fiammetta Martegani, of the American Jewish of Syrian descent artist Lenore Mizrachi-Cohen, who has been already a guest of an art residence at the Jewish Museum Lecce, who will tell, through a series of installations site specificpieces of art, the exhibition tells about the history of Jewish people and its migrations from the time of the expulsions from Puglia to the Jewish diaspora today.

The two exhibitions will be placed side by side in order to convey this extraordinary historical narrative to an international and intergenerational audience and to bring it up to date in the contemporary context, contributing to making Puglia a major cultural destination.

With the participation of Michelangelo Mazzotta and Francesco De Giorgi, CEOs of Jewish Museum Lecce.

Followed by musical accompaniment by Eleonora Carbone (harp) and tasting offered by Cantine Leuci winery.

Monday, 27th January 2025

10:30 amJewish Museum Lecce – Students from several schools in the Province of Lecce will visit the Museum and the ancient medieval Giudecca. To follow, they will meet Claudio Fano, a direct witness of the racial laws and an escapee from the deportation of the Jews of the Rome Ghetto on 16 October 1943, who recounts his experience as a child during the German occupation. Will attend Fabrizio Lelli and Fabrizio Ghio.

5:30 pmBiblioteca del Negroamaro e delle terre d’Arneo, Guagnano – As part of the Review Semi di Coscienza, a meeting will be held with Claudio Fano, a direct witness of the racial laws and escaped the deportation of the Jews of the Rome Ghetto on 16 October 1943. Moderator: Prof. Fabrizio Lelli.

Thursday, 28th January 2025

10:30 am – Biblioteca dell’I.I.S.S. Luigi Einaudi, Manduria – As part of the series of events organised by the Municipality of Manduria on the occasion of the Holocaust Remembrance Day 2025, Prof. Fabrizio Lelli will give a talk entitled "Jewish Memory in Apulia – Fragments of History", offering a unique opportunity to deepen the link between the Jewish community and the Puglia region. The event represents an important opportunity to reflect on historical memory and will see the participation of the institutions of the Municipality of Manduria, including the Dott. Gregorio Pecoraro, Mayor of Manduria, and Prof. Vito Andrea Mariggiò, Culture Councillor. To complete the programme, the director Mirko Di Lorenzo will present the project "Elisa Springer's House of Memory“.

11:00 am – Istituto Comprensivo, Salice Salentino – Students from ICS Salice Salentino meet Claudio Fano, direct witness of the racial laws and escaped the deportation of the Jews from the Rome Ghetto on 16 October 1943.
With the participation of Francesco De Giorgi, CEO of Jewish Museum Lecce.

12:00 pm – Jewish Museum Lecce – As part of the Review "Semi di Coscienza”, students from A. Schweitzer Secondary School of Guagnano will visit the Jewish Museum in Lecce, the ancient medieval Giudecca and the MAiDE Art Gallery with the exhibition "Lecce’s limestone heritage and more”.
