MENORAH

MENORAH

Seven-branched candelabrum. It is a word that derives from the same root of or, “light”, and indicates the seven-branched candelabrum that was once standing in the Temple of Jerusalem. Since ancient times, it has been one of the main symbols of the Jewish communities. It was located in the mobile sanctuary built by Moses for the Ark of the Covenant; it was fed by olive oil. It later became part of the sacred furnishings of the Temple of Jerusalem and its first known depiction is that of the bas-relief on the Arch of Titus in Rome, which recalls the destruction and looting of the Jewish Sanctuary.
